Chapter 8

Laurel

My teeth clattered together so hard it woke me up.

Not completely but slowly. I felt like I was trudging through murky, thick mud. I couldn’t seem to fully wake up. Frozen, murky, thick mud.

Yet, even half-awake, I could tell something was wrong.

Knocking sounded from my door.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

Each one a little louder.

Harder.

“Laurel?” Oakley’s deep voice called out. I sighed, burrowing myself deeper into the mountain of blankets I was under. Even then, I was still freezing. My toes moved slowly. They felt like ice.

“Troublemaker, I need you to wake up!” he called out again, his voice slightly muffled. I tried to wake up completely, and as I came awake, I heard it. The whirring of wind was what muffled his voice.

Knocking sounded again, louder than before. I could hear Oak’s deep voice calling out to me again.

“Laurel!”

Knock. Knock. Knock.

“Goddamn it, Laurel, answer the door, baby!”

I sat up with wide eyes and my heart racing. The moment the blankets slipped off me, I shivered.

“Shit,” I squeaked. My place was freezing. The power was out. The space heaters. The generator. Everything including the little light I left on so I wouldn’t get stuck in the dark was out.

“Crap!” I stood and shivered. My body trembled as I moved to the door and stubbed my toe against the counter. “Ouch!” I cried before reaching the door.

There he was. My big ole mountain man.

My big ole mountain man?

“Jesus, baby,” he huffed under his breath, and in my sleepy haze I thought he was mad. “Baby, what are you wearing?”

That’s when I woke up. The rasp in his voice sent tingles down my spine that had nothing to do with the frigid air. Self-awareness kicked in.

His big frame stepped into my trailer, and my eyes widened with the unadulterated way his gaze seemed to soak me in. I looked down at myself because I couldn’t remember what I’d gone to bed in. An ice-blue satiny nightgown with white lace edging that hit my ankles. It wasn’t crazy sexy, other than the slit at the side of my left thigh.

“This old thing?” I joked and shivered. A sound of frustration vibrated through him as he quickly moved toward me. So quickly, all I could do was watch as he took off his coat and covered me up in it.

“Oak, what are you doing?” I asked softly as he pulled an arm through and then the other.

“Snow’s coming down hard. All the power’s out,” he shared as his hands zipped up the jacket. “Looks like it’s a blizzard,” he added. “Here.” He took his wool-lined beanie off his head and covered mine with it

“Wait, I have my own things,” I blurted, my brain finally functioning. “I can cover up in that and—"

“No time or need,” he muttered, and before I knew it, I was up in the air.

“Oakley!” I gasped with a nervous giggle. Like a bride in her groom’s arms, he swept me out of my place. And I let him. I didn’t fight or argue.
